Payne & Elise Junker

Iron

Payne and Elise Junker have been exploring the art of metal for over 15 years. They have combined their love of nature with an understanding of engineering and design to create original craft for the home and garden. Payne began learning blacksmithing techniques while still in high school then went on to acquire a degree in Russian Studies. Upon returning to Vermont, he realized how much he enjoyed smithing and took up the craft in earnest. Starting with a mastery of colonial tools and hardware, he gradually built up his reportoire to include Art Nouveau, Deco, Arts and Crafts, Adirondack and contemporary styles.

He creates fireplace screens and tools, beds, tables, lighting, railings and sculpture. Elise Alenick Junker began her life in art as a modern dancer, studying in New York City and eventually creating her own company and dance studio. During all this, she supported herself by first folk painting on wood and metal (inspired by Peter Hunt) then by designing and painting a line of cotton clothing, which she sold at shows throughout New England. Eventually Payne enticed her into trying torch work in metal and Junker Studio's present incarnation began. The Junkers collaborate on numerous projects, giving each other advice and criticism.

They feel that combining their talents gives them a larger perspective on their work and continual inspiration to create beautiful things! They are members of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and the Vermont State Craft Centers. Some of their most recent projects include: the weathervane and Vermont State seal for the new Vermont State Welcome Center in Guilford, VT; a custom chandelier and display brackets for the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester, VT and they won 'Best in show' for their 'Leaping Trout' garden bench at the League of NH Craftsmen Show- sculpture garden exhibit- in Sunapee, NH.
