Irene Lederer LaCroix
Raku Pottery & Tiles
Irene’s direction in clay has been focused on Raku fired pottery and tiles. The raku process can entail many firings and then an immersion of the pots into a mixture of combustible materials. Recently Irene has been adding saggars to the firing process. The crafts of many cultures have inspired her to decorate simple, traditional forms in a very contemporary manner. Irene’s designs range from simple brushstrokes to intricate abstract patterns and line drawings, which are enhanced by the smoke and flames of the raku process. The surfaces are rich in visual texture.
This unique pottery is usually wheel thrown, often altered, burnished by hand and fired in an electric kiln. The pots are then glazed, decorated with various slips and stains and fired again, often multiple times, in a raku kiln to 1850 degrees Fahrenheit. At this point, each pot is removed and immersed in a mixture of combustible materials. This process imparts a rich black luster as well as a variety of effects created by the smoke and flames. Irene has been developing her firing and decorating techniques over the last 20 years at her studio in Jericho, Vermont.
She is included in the Vermont Art Council's Artist Register. Her work is displayed at galleries in New England under the name of Rend'l Pottery.
